Why are you passionate about dirt/BuildWitt?
I grew up on a big ranch in south Texas and I spent much of my youth on the back of a tractor. During college summer breaks, I worked on farms and spent one very hot summer doing roof jobs. After college, I spent 6 years in the Marines as an artillery officer, often working in the field for weeks.
So I’ve always enjoyed working hard, and being on a team of people that enjoy working hard. But I didn’t have a big connection to construction until 2012 when I went to HCSS to lead their marketing department. I spent 6 years there and I fell in love with the people and companies in heavy civil construction.
Being at BuildWitt means I get to work every day with some of the best people on the planet–our partners and our team. And I love our mission to improve the dirt world.
What motivates you more than anything else? What’s your personal “why”?
I’m a little weird because I really enjoy great marketing. I don’t often see it, because 98% of the world thinks marketing is bragging about yourself and trying to persuade people how great your company or product is. It’s not that companies are sleazy or dumb, it’s just that they don’t know any better and they’re following what everyone else is doing.
So what motivates me to wake up every day is getting to help a few contractors do marketing very differently. And seeing the results they achieve and the improvements marketing makes in their company is almost like a drug to me. I’m addicted to it.
Favorite past times/hobbies?
I enjoy my work and consider it a hobby. But outside of that, I love spending time with my beautiful wife, my 5 kids, their spouses, and my 3 grandkids. And I enjoy working out in my home gym and caring for our 9 fruit trees.
